What is the .SWM file type?

The .swm filename extension stands for the Split Windows Image (.swm) file type within the Windows Image (.wim) format used in the scope of Microsoft's Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) framework.

File

Split Windows Image (.swm) files are created from a single WIM file by breaking it into several smaller parts. This is usually done if the WIM image would not fit onto an installation medium (e.g., a DVD disk). The resulting .swm files borrow the name of the original .wim file, appending a trailing numerical index. Microsoft defines 'install.swm' as the only safe filename pattern to use when deploying directly from split images.

SWM images can be deployed with Microsoft's DISM tools or the standalone ImageX utility. Deployment from SWM images is not supported on Windows 8 and 8.1. If necessary, both WIM and SWM packages can be opened as regular archives. The SWM format is commonly used by laptop manufacturers for emergency recovery installation packages typically found on hidden partitions.

Software to open or convert SWM files

You can open SWM files with the following programs:
7-Zip by Igor Pavlov
WinZip by Winzipper Pvt Ltd.
PowerArchiver by ConeXware, Inc.

As I mentioned in my previous posts, Microsoft brought back Split WIM functionality with the latest MDT (Microsoft Deployment Tools) – which is great! – but what if you're trying to achieve the opposite? I ran into this situation this past week and was pulling my hair out trying to find the solution.

The Situation: We have multiple swm files (install.swm, install2.swm, install3.swm) and want to merge, convert, export (pick your verb) them into a single WIM.

The Problem: We know DISM supports this functionality as it has an 'export-image' command baked in – but I implore you to try and figure out the correct syntax to make it work. I had done this successfully once before, but I simply could not remember what I did to make it work. Through trial and error and eventually just Googling around helplessly, I found my answer. And funny enough, the blog where I found my answer had a very similar story as my own.

The Solution: I'll jump straight to the answer as this article will be more of a reference than anything else.
